Prometeo gallery, Milano

Prometeo was founded on the initiative of Ida Pisani, after a long history as a cultural association, evolving in 2005 into a gallery with offices in Milan and Lucca

Prometeo gallery has always distinguished itself as a catalyst for the social and political demands of multimedia visual artists.

The project inaugurated with Perra, by Guatemalan artist Regina José Galindo, who -in the same 2005- won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale as Best Artist Under 35. That award had been given in 2001 to Anìbal Lòpez, another Guatemalan artist represented by the gallery.

2007 saw the first “Trabajos italianos” exhibition by Spanish master Santiago Sierra, who presented in Milan his action “Los Anarquistas,” conceived for the space of the “Volume!” Foundation in Rome.

Among the gallery’s artists invited over the years to the Venice Biennale: Ivan Moudov, Giuseppe Stampone, Regina José Galindo, Mary Zygouri, Stefano Tsivoupoulos, Hiwa K.

In 2017, some milestones in Prometeo’s journey: Sierra’s solo show “Mea culpa” at the PAC in Milan, where Galindo had also exhibited in 2014 and where Zehra Dogan will exhibit in 2021; also at the 14th edition of Documenta, no less than four artists represented by Prometeo Gallery are present: Stefano Tsivopoulos, Regina José Galindo, Mary Zygouri, Hiwa K.  Shortly thereafter, Kurdish-Iraqi artist Hiwa K exhibits at the New Museum in New York. Galindo’s work Tierra (2013) becomes part of MoMA New York’s collection in 2021, as the third work by the artist acquired by the museum. In the same year Regina is awarded the “Robert Rauschemberg Award”.

In 2019, the gallery begins representing the work of Kurdish-Turkish artist Zehra Doğan, included in Art Review’s “Power 100” in 2020 and 2021. Her prison drawings were recently published in the graphic novel titled “Prison No. 5”.
